Flemish Harpsichord
The harpsichord is a stringed keyboard instrument that was the predecessor to the piano. The harpsichords unique sound comes from the strings being plucked rather than hammered. The Birmingham Conservatoire harpsichord which was sampled for my portfolio instrument is an 18th century Flemish harpsichord. There are two strings sets on the harpsichord which are referred to as 8-1 and 8-2. 8 -2 offers a more nasal sound as the strings are plucked closed to the bridge. If a muted sound is required the 8 -1 string set has a lever with which to apply a set of leather dampeners.
The kontakt portfolio instrument allows access to all the above features via simple on\off buttons. It also provides attack and release controls.
